We looked at the first chapter last night. We realised there is a great deal to it! A lot to read and digest, even if you just do the “key passages”. A useful discussion. I was struck by the “completeness” of the whole story – how elements of the creation story crop up at various times though the Bible, and culminate in Revelation, with the Tree of Life appearing once again. We marvelled at the wonder of creation, and the bond created between man and woman due to the fact that Eve was created from a part of Adam. Whether his rib was literally used in the process was unclear, but its clear that Eve’s creation depended upon Adam, whereas God had created Adam from nothing! He could have done the same with Eve but chose not to!

I was struck that the creation story is like a joyful song! God had such a blast creating everything – and he kept looking at the things he’d made and joyfully saying they are gooooooood!
There is even a bit (Gen 1:27) where the text is laid out like a song/poem and this is the bit that says ‘God created people in his own image, male and female he created them’ (or something like that!). This is like the amazing refrain in the song – a massive great orchestral piece with loads of brass and drums and stuff, all going for it!
We can know for sure that the Lord really enjoyed making us, he chose to make us the top of creation and signified that by making us in his own image – what could be more of a reminder that he thinks we are special? – and to love and bless us.
What an amazing God we serve! x
